Interview with Fenriz

Taken from Evisceration #2, 1993.

I could hardly believe I've received this letter. When I wrote the questions for interview everyone said me DARKTHRONE don't answer any interview at all! But believe you or not Fenriz answered my questions. So enjoy this interview 'coz I really don't know so many mags featured DARKTHRONE's interview.

So how are you?

Who cares?

What music are you listening now when you answering this?

I was thinking of putting on some old DESTRUCTION, but instead I'll listen to a recording with the great Norwegian band HUMID.

Can you yourself to critic your all albums shortly?

I like all DARKTHRONE albums.

OK, tell me the difference between ISENGARD and DARKTHRONE?

A big difference - in ISENGARD I play everything myself, and ISENGARD is often inspired by Norwegian folk music.

I read one zine where long time before you answered like a death band. You said many good things about death metal?

A long time ago, death metal was grim, true and brutal, but then the scene wimped out. We wanted the old days back, when old DESTRUCTION, CELTIC FROST and BATHORY was very evil.

What do you think about 'zines? Don't you think they also following a trends as many bands?

When DARKTHRONE started playing black metal, we said "FUCK YOU". Ugly to the shitty deathmetal underground. But then we thought: "now people are probably going to start writing black metal mags as well" and of course that had to happen. So we told the first black magazines that wrote us to fuck off, but it didn't help much - we never did anything to make black metal trendy! But now I think black metal has become a trend - BUT it is only great that more and more people are becoming antichristians.

Can you tell me who are you outside DARKTHRONE?

I only believe in self - taught musicians.

What Norwegian bands do you like now?

BURZUM, HUMID, V.B.SPACEBAND.

Don't you think your deal with PEACEVILLE did the B.M. very popular and help to appear very much trendy bands?

As long as the hordes get bigger it's OK, because we're all antichristians.

I know that Norwegian people are very quiet and it's looks like very quiet country. Why your black metal scene are so strong? Maybe it because of special nature of a country, history?

You are right, the nature and history are a helpful resource of inspiration.

What more impressed you to create such music and lyrics?

The essence of the old bands: Old DESTRUCTION old CELTIC FROST (and HELLHAMMER) old SODOM old KREATOR old BATHORY etc.

Black - the music of darkness. So did the darkness chose you or you chose the darkness?

The darkness chose me. When hell calls your name, there's no way back...

How do you think what more can rise such dark feelings as black metal do?

Nothing. Black metal is the ultimate channeling of evil.

Is feelings enough to understand the darkness or you need more (knowledge, magics etc)?

You need at least the basic information. I should think.

Is satanism a religion? I heard opinions that it's christianity turned inside out?

Satan comes in many shapes and forms, my lad.

What do you think about death?

DEATH IS CERTAIN - LIFE IS NOT!

And what can you say about paganism and neopaganism? Pagan and satanism, which way can better help us to find and understand a true darkness?

I wouldn't think it was necessary for regular satanism to have a silver lining of paganism woven into the web, but as long as we get rid of Jesus, I really don't mind if crossovers like this will or would occur.

Now about music. "Under a Funeral Moon" is very impressive album but it's very simple from technical position. Do you think that any death band could do the same? Maybe they would afraid to do it 'coz afraid to be called as can't playing?

We say that black metal must be simple. Many people don't seem to have the guts to play simple because, as you said, they are afraid that people will think that they can't play.

Your 2nd album you dedicated to Euronymous, what can you say about Count Grishnackh and BURZUM?

BURZUM forever! Varg is the star beyond the stars.

So thats all. I'd like to ask more but I really didn't hope to receive the answers, so maybe you can try to ask them more interesting questions and of course then send me your zine. I'd like read all about DARKTHRONE. And of course, THANX FENRIZ!
