DARKTHRONE, the cult and most hated band on the planet. The most prominent phenomenon on the Norwegian scene. Kings of the throne. Yes, much can be said about this great band. About their horrible sound and divine lyrics. DARKTHRONE will always remain original, something uncommon in modern Black Metal. “A Blaze In The Northern Sky” was monstrous, “Under A Funeral Moon” grotesque, “Transilvanian Hunger” pure evil, “Panzerfaust” furiously brutal, and “Total Death” satanically twisted - always remaining true to the roots of old Black Metal. Here is a conversation with drummer and unquestionable king, Fenriz.
Right now DARKTHRONE consists only of you and Kveldulv. And if I am correctly informed, Kveldulv has moved, so you live quite far from each other. Is that a problem?
Kveldulv comes by bus, so it is not a problem.
Who writes the music for DARKTHRONE now, and who influences you?
Kveldulv and I write the music equally. The influences are the same as always - CELTIC FROST, BATHORY, etc., and also DARKTHRONE albums.
On your last album “Total Death” most of the lyrics were written by other people. Don’t you think it’s better to write the lyrics yourself?
I thought I could unite people by letting them write lyrics for DARKTHRONE.
Your music changes a lot from album to album, while still remaining unique. Your opinion?
I don’t think it changes that much. I disagree with you, although I understand what you mean.
The title “Panzerfaust” is quite unusual for a black metal album. Why did you choose it?
It is a furious weapon, and it sounds damn grim. That’s why we chose it.
I think “Panzerfaust” is your most unusual album. What made you create it that way?
Because DARKTHRONE wants to be nasty. Not many other bands want to be nasty. (You’re right - Ed.)
When will your next album be recorded, and is there already a title for it?
We have no plans for new albums at the moment, but soon “Goatlord” will be released. It was recorded right after “Soulside Journey”.
Hmm… I’ve read in many magazines that DARKTHRONE would never play live again. But you recently played a show with SATYRICON and DISSECTION. Anything to say in your defense?
Nocturno Culto forced me (poor guy - Ed.). Anyway, that was our last concert.
Why don’t you want to play live?
It’s shit… stress, bad sound, etc.
Well, I think you’ll hate the next two questions…
I hated the previous nine as well… Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!!! <…>
What is so fascinating about “goat” music?
Filters, 303 and a 1/16 wall.
Does that music influence you when you compose (BLACK) METAL?
No!
Not long ago there were many church burnings in Norway. Why do you think there are so few now?
Probably those shitty buildings installed fire alarms…
What is your opinion on church burnings and grave desecration?
Hmm… Church burnings - Satanic work. Grave desecration I don’t understand.
How is it working with MOONFOG?
Excellent.
Will you remain on that label?
Yes.
Do you have material for a new ISENGARD album?
No. At the moment STORM is more important.
Tell us about the new STORM material. When will it be finished?
Finnish? STORM is Norwegian!!! Ha-ha-ha-ha… (Oh no… Fenriz is joking again… Sorry, I mispronounced “finished”… - Ed.) We were thrown out of our rehearsal place because we are Satanists (SATYRICON rehearsed there too). We are going to start rehearsing now (September ’96), but first we have to find a new rehearsal place.
Any news about NEPTUNE TOWERS?
I recorded the third album, but it won’t be released yet. It’s too early. It was recorded in ’94.
Ha-ha… Tell us what you think about ROSMARIE KIEN?
She represents Jesus and many things I really do not approve of…
Last words.
Oljesjåfør med dårlig vedlikeholdt tanngard. (Hmm… that one was too deep for me. - Ed.)
