After checking out the "Soulside Journey" L.P., which in my opinion is one of the fuckin' best albums around today I wanted to get a more inside knowledge in DARKTHRONE. I wrote Hank "Gylve" Amarillo a nice letter, and some weirdo called Fenriz wrote me back. If you're confused by now please read the interview, but a clue: Hank has changed his name into Fenriz... To be more satanic I think. Read about their dark future....
To start the interview, please tell me what DARKTHRONE has been up to lately ?
It really doesn't matter. We recently kicked out our bassist Dag and changed style. We were thinking of changing bandname too, but we didn't. So we're THE NEW DARKTHRONE now. What ever we did in the past we started in late December '87. Also we're extremely resistant to live playing. We do not wish to play live anymore. The audience is not the kind of people that likes death metal.
Don't you think it's necesary to enjoy live playing to make a good show, or don't you really care ?
I don't give a necrobastial fuck about what we're supposed to do. The new DARKTHRONE ain't no fucking social club! We do what we want, but what is most important is to avoid trendy death metal stuff. (Bomb Morrissund).
I've heard rumors saying that you only took 4 hours to record the drumspart on the LP, are they true ? Why did you take such a short time ?
Why should I take more. If you can play a drum kit, you shouldn't have to use more than one take. On our new LP "A Blaze In The Northern Sky" I used 1 1/2 hour to record the drums. Using two days on one instrument in a studio, is a waste of time.
Your lyrics are very occult, are you really into such stuff ?
No, they're just for fun ha ha.... ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR FUCKING MIND!? CAN'T YOU FEEL MY LYRICS ARE FOR REAL. I LIVE AND DIE FOR MY LYRICS!! IT'S SATANIC POETRY!!! (Don't kill me, I'm only the editor!!)
What will happen the day that DARKTHRONE can't exist anymore ?
I don't care. I hope that our albums have grown evil seeds in peoples minds. I will probably buy a synthesizer and so will Nocturno Culto. I don't know about Zephyrous, he said he wanted to shoot.
The underground is stopped alot to grow by rip offs do you have a cure against them ?
The underground isn't underground anymore...It's a trend. Your letter is one of the last I'll answer, unless letters interested in black metal appears. You must understand, I'm not interested in death metal or death metal scene. I will only answer letters concerning black metal.
When will the next release be out from you ?
Well, we just recorded our 2nd album "A Blaze In The Northern Sky". And it was done in the same studio as MAYHEM's "Deathcrush". This album is totally different from "Soulside..." And we don't expect fans of "Soulside..." to like our 2nd album. It's out before 1992, that's all I know.
But don't you think it'll be hard to make a follow up release anyway ?
Do I have talk more shit about "Soulside..."? It might have been a solid death metal album, but we hate death metal. Now we play death metal.
Then what inspires you to write your new music ?
Hah! Darkness and evil forests of ice and ancient castles. Masturbating on the head of Christ.
You say that death metal has become to trendy, don't you think that black metal will be trendy as well ?
Not if all you death metallers left us alone! Black metal hasn't been trendy yet, and I honestly hope the number of black metal bands never exceed 50. We are not of your kind. NO brothership is allowed. Black metal should have its own well-guarded scene!!
A band like DEICIDE has some awfull simple lyrics, don't you think it takes more than just singing "SATAN"....ARRRGH....SATAN..." to be a black metal band?
HA HA HA. Are you kidding? DEICIDE is not a black metal band just because they have twisted lyrics. I prefer to create atmospheres myself, and all black metal lyrics reflects dark atmospheres. I like it all. VENOM lyrics rules, also ROTTING CHRIST's.
Do you think such bands are real into black metal?
VENOM is for me the basic band when it comes to reflecting "christian" satanism. I don't like most of lyrics that go simple that. But you can never know who's into blackforces or not. It's in the brain, heart and soul, and it's an invisible force. It should definately reflect your music and also clothing and imagery.
Then what is your line-up ? have you got some ritual names ? What do they mean ?
Our line-up is: Fenriz Percussion, satanic poetry and haunting chants. Zephyrous Electric rythm guitar now bass. Nocturno Culto Lead guitar and voice of the night. One does not speak of these names, one chose to reflect a personality. Fenriz is my name now and only the ones that hold the basic wisdom will understand.
To me it seems like there's only a few black bands that actually knows something about the subject. Can you mention some bands that just sing about Satan, and actually doesn't know a shit about what they sing about;
The worst satanic lyrics is the ones from NOCTURNUS. But somehow I still feel a satanic potential in those Florida guys. We'll see as time passes... But NOCTURNUS is not an example of the kind of guys you wants to drag through the dirt. I know of no such band.
